Carlyn and her crew arrived safely back at camp just after lunch today, but they wrote this in the final days of their adventure:
This week was the last but best week of the trip. We sailed south from Desolation Sound, stopping in Gorge Harbor, Campbell Bay, and Friday Harbor. We did our first overnight sail through the Straits of Georgia, and we split into three watches:
First watch: 2000-0000- Bryanna, Maddie, Finn
Second watch: 0000-0400- Lily, Dave, Ian
Third Watch: 0400-0800- Stella, Oliver, Conland
Although we were all sleep-deprived, it was such a cool experience, and we learned a lot! We did tons of swimming and beach exploring. We saw so many whales. We even stopped in the middle of the straits to swim with them, and they came as close as 30 ft to the boat! On our last night in Canada, Maddie fell in the water while brushing her teeth, and the bioluminescence was so bright that we all jumped in for a night swim. The bioluminescence was crazy, and it looked like blue mermaid sparkles in the water. We crossed the boundary line, and half the boat was in Canada and half in the US. Dave wants it to be known that he was the first person to re-enter the US. In Friday Harbor, we got ice cream at the local shop that had 72 flavors! We had a burger grill-out, made Canadian poutine for dinner, and celebrated the last night with a slideshow. We are sad that the trip is over, but we had a blast and are excited for the final four days at camp. See you soon!
